BISA Joins Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce

BISA Nonprofit is excited to announce we’re now proud members of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce.

The Metro Charleston Chamber of Commerce is a 5-star accredited chamber tackling government relations, talent development, leadership advancement, and more.

About the Metro Charleston Chamber of Commerce:
As a membership organization, 1,600 members strong representing over 160,000 professionals, we serve as a collective voice to drive solutions for a thriving community. We work each day for our members, each of their employees and our entire community to ensure we have a healthy business environment. We tackle the toughest regional challenges like housing attainability, infrastructure and bridging the talent gap, while creating exclusive access, networking and leadership opportunities to grow your business and your employees.

We can tackle the tough issues because of the strength of our members and volunteer leaders. Together, our collective voices are advancing our region. And yes, it is because of each one of our members and leaders, and our tremendous staff, that we were honored to be named the 2018 Chamber of the Year by the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives and to be commemorating 250 years.

Maria Gmitro, BISA’s president and founder resides in Charleston, South Carolina. “When BISA was founded, we were not sure how much we would need to grow our organization. Now, we know we need to grow — being a part of the Metro Charleston Chamber of Commerce will help connect us to the professional support we need.”

What’s our goal? BISA wants to keep women safe, healthy, and informed. One example of our work is public and patient education and awareness campaigns. This spring, we spent time on the College of Charleston campus to help educate the public about the safety of breast implants (when considering or living with breast implants). The awareness event was a success, and the conversations confirmed the need for our important work.

Another example of one of our goals is to advocate for mandatory Unique Device Identifier (UDI) record-keeping and patient recall alerts.

Many plastic surgery procedures are performed outside of hospitals. A two-pronged approach would require the health provider to record the Unique Device Identifier (UDI) of the exact implants used and contact the patient directly in the event of a Class I or Class II recall. Currently, the process is only suggested guidance.

BISA is proud to be a part of the Metro Charleston Chamber of Commerce network. We’re forward to supporting local professionals as we grow our organization!

Breast Implant Safety Alliance (BISA) is a 501(c)3 women-owned nonprofit, patient-centered organization dedicated to improving breast implant safety and awareness—through direct collaboration with consumers, medical professionals, manufacturers, regulators, and advocates. BISA is a 100% volunteer organization not funded by implant manufacturers.
